Loving Lionel
Sorry I couldn't find a better photo to illustrate the afro worn my Mike Evans, who played Lionel Jefferson on All in the Family, but I had to include him on this list.
Evans' 'fro is supremely sublime, and an excellent specimen. The shaping of the hair is subtle, but it makes all the difference from the standard lollipop configurations of the '70s. Add the sideburns and you have an Afro Hall of Fame contender.
On AitF, Lionel was always the voice of reason, pointing out the ridiculousness of Archie Bunker's opinions with a dry wit that would catch up to Bunker two beats later. His afro had much the same impact. Shaped afros would become all the rage a decade later with the likes of Bobby Brown and Kid n Play (not sure if it was Kid or Play who had the stovepipe do), but those were more or less gimmicks, and thus disqualified from this forum.
Mike Evans, for your pioneering efforts, I am proud to include you on this list.

Putting the Funk in Garfunkel
Okay, so the title is hackneyed, but I had to get this item up pronto after reviewing my Gladwell post.
The creepy thing is, if Art Garfunkel and Phil Spector ever had a child, it would be Malcolm Gladwell...

Another Noteworth Afro
What's up with Malcolm Gladwell's hair these days? At risk of dignifying a gimmick, this one just has to be included. The only thing Gladwell's missing is the rainbow effect and a sign that says "John 3:16."
Sorry, Malcolm, but you are looking like a bad imitation of Art Garfunkel. Which reminds me...
