I
used to love reading Creem magazine because it didn't
take rock & roll too seriously. It was generally funny
as hell, and there was always a cool interview with a
band I liked. But I hated their record reviews because
they never seemed to say much about the record. So a Pretenders
review would end up being a story about how J. Kordosh
went out fishing with his buddy Bill Holdship, got drunk,
and lost their car keys in the lake right as they were
reeling in the small mouthed-bass. C'mon man - that doesn't
tell me if the damn record rocks or not. So that always
bothered me.
But as I do this thing called growing up, I've begun to
realize that the best record reviews aren't straight-ahead
reviews about the great music or lyrics blaring out of
your speakers. A well-written review helps the reader
understand how the reviewer felt while he was listening
to Joe/Joan Blow's new reckid.
So with that in mind, I think I should let you know that
I had diarrhea while listening to the new Mick Jagger
record.
