It's
amazing that U2 can release an album that actually sounds
like classic era U2 and no one but no one knows about
it because the movie studio hasn't bothered to release
the film in America, and radio is just too dumb to play
it. But whatever the case, if you like U2, you'll like
this soundtrack.
It's
not all U2 - there are only 3 actual "U2" songs on it,
but Bono and the boys are all over it as guest musicians,
co-song writers, and in establishing the overall mood
of the disc (Bono co-wrote and produced the film). The
house band for most of the album consists of Bono, Brian
Eno, Daniel Lanois (U2, Chris Whitley producer), jazz
guitarist Bill Frisell, and Adam Dorn (from the electronic/drum
& bass outfit Mocean Worker), and they do an excellent
job of establishing moody, laid back, soundscapes that
will make you wanna get close to someone quick.
The
best track is a Bono/Lanois song called "Falling At Your
Feet" - easily a Grammy award winner in a fair & just
parallel universe. And there are 2 good covers too - including
Milla Janovich (the movie's star along with Mel Gibson)
singing Lou Reed's "Satellite Of Love" without the "ah
uh oh"s, and a Spanish version of the Sex Pistol's classic
song called "Anarchy In The USA".
Million
Dollar Hotel is worth the price of admission.
