The
Lovelies
White Leather (2003)

The
Lovelies offer much more than simple “girl power”
when it comes to their approach to pop music. Yes, the
two trendy ladies leading the vocals are sexy, but this
band has more to offer than just another pretty face or
two. Their brand of pop has a certain nostalgic quality
that gives it instant credibility with the “older
kids” who know what pop was...when pop was cool.
With
their White Leather album being released by Force
MP, the hip little indie label out of St. Louis, the band
proves that the ‘80s style of three-piece band can
still work.
Check
out the catchy lyrics of “I Want Your Love”,
“Look At Yourself”, and “Slow Down Navigator.”
Ttake in the dominant guitar riff, head-bob with the driving
beat of the drums, and experience that same pop sensation
that used to be everywhere – coast to coast –
from 1985 to 1990.
“Tommy”
is a silly song with silly lyrics that will get stuck
in your head – another gift from the greed decade.
I recommend this song for pre-teens due to its simplicity
and humor. It’s better than the Barney song, for
sure.
“Constellation”,
“Strange One”, and “Taken” are
other worthy tracks to play for your friends. These songs
remind me of the cool chicks in high school (Class of
’87 rules!) and have that Breakfast Club
appeal.
Overall,
White Leather has 13 quality tracks with a really
bad hidden track that represents no musical talent whatsoever
(why do bands try to be funny?). Still, there are several
worthy songs here that should be on radio, if radio had
any artistic integrity.
Since
mainstream radio is no longer “in it for the music”,
bands like The Lovelies have to be found the old fashioned
way – someone tells you about them. Well, it is
my pleasure to do so.
