Compost Records - Various Artists

Party Keller: Funk, Boogie, Reggae, Hip Hop (2004)

Review by: Jason Thornberry
Date: 6/1/04

Think you might have heard some of these tracks before? That's how I felt before it was even halfway finished. Closer investigation reveals that several of these dusty songs wound up being sampled in other well-known songs by artists like DJ Shadow, The Stereo MC's and others. Many of the other songs got their best verses and choruses, "borrowed" for other songs. Well, now they're finally safe.

The crazy, brilliant deejay Florian Keller has rounded up some of, well, some of everything this time around. And a big thanks to Compost Records for continued excellence with this one. The reggae, rare groove, funk, soul, pre-electro, pre-house, and pre-hip-hop tones all come back out to show how it sounded at the very beginning of the beginning, making this indispensable for purists and musical archeologists who'd like a day off from crate dust.
