Pony Up!

S/T (EP) (2005)

Review by: Rafael Garcia
Date: 2/15/05

All-female group Pony Up! add a decidedly fresh element to the typical indie pop archetype with their irrepressible irreverence and jovial sense of humor on this debut 7-song EP. Upbeat and fun throughout, the band’s work is reminiscent of Camera Obscura and early Liz Phair, while often managing to throw in the occasional accordion or xylophone. What results is an endearing entry in the pages of indie pop canon.

Pony Up!’s delightful songwriting reminds everyone what it’s like to be a kid again. High school-style gossip and 80’s movie stars take center stage in these lyrics. And with all five members of the band sharing roles in the vocals department, the EP’s offerings are injected with considerable variety in delivery.

On “Matthew Modine,” the Quebecois quintet idolizes the obscure actor to the tune of oldies doo-wop sung over a lo-fi buzz, only to explode in faux-orgasmic shrieks at the song’s, um, climax. And were it half a notch more intense, “Going Nowhere” would give acts like Pretty Girls Make Graves a run for their money, what with its pronounced bass line, mounting synthesizer, and sharp vocal delivery. As it stands, Pony Up! proves itself a band to look out for thanks to its catchy pop and exciting sense of invention
