Chris
Stuart & Backcountry
Mojave River (2004)
Review

Mojave
River is an entertaining bluegrass CD that paints
a variety of “authentically Americana” landscapes
thanks to some crafty lyrics and exceptional vocals. Mojave
River also is an entertaining country CD under an
Appalachian influence dictated by the choice of instruments
and style of play.
Chris
Stuart is a talented songwriter and Nashville publishers
should remember his name. “Sin Stealer” and
“Rider On This Train” are bonafide country
hits and many mainstream artists who are writing-challenged
would do well to listen up.
The three members of Backcountry are so much more than
just qualified players and pickers. They each have writing
credits on this CD and their input helps keep Mojave
River from becoming too much of the same thing. Janet
Beazley wrote the plucky little love song “Take
Me Into Your Heart” and Ivan Rosenberg co-wrote
the sad, sad “Don’t Throw Mama’s Flowers
Away”. Both are realistically colorful songs that
stir emotion.
As expected, there is a lot of banjo on this CD. “Buttermilk
Pie” has a certain clogging rhythm and will be a
favorite no doubt. “Old No. 7 and Me” and
“Dollar Bill Blues” reminds me of sitting
on a front porch…in a rocking chair…with a
fat chew. “Ullapool/The Sleeping Tide” is
a soothing instrumental piece.
Overall, this is an exceptional CD because the tracks
are exceptional. There is strong musicianship, meaningful
lyrics, and enough variety to keep your interest. This
is the kind of CD that you will listen to later and pick
up on something you missed the first few times around.
