January 7, 2003 ( 1:19 AM )

So seven days into the New Year and I can say that I'm starting it as I ended it. Listening to Mingus' 'Ah Um,' which is never a bad thing. Today, I began to wonder if it will ever stop snowing in Manhattan. It's not a bad thing - don't get me wrong. It's not as if I have any appointments to keep or even places to go. Trust me - that's a good thing.

My New Years Eve featured two Italian women: one who kept hitting me up for blow and the other who kept wanting to call her father back in Italy collect. It ended with Melissa playing one of my favorite songs '7 Seconds' by Youssou N'Dour and Nenah Cherry and New Years pints with Webb and Fish, whom I've spent dozens of New Years with, down on 11th Street. I believe the evening was best summed up by Fish as 'Ain't No Half Stepping.' Overall I'd have to say that it was a stellar way to ring in the New Year.

So what's on tap for me this year. Like the rest of the 2Walls crew, I intend to write more about music: I've been wanting to write a review of Corey Harris and Henry Butler's Vu-Du Menz for quite some time now. Be warned, when I say music I'm also including Juliana Hatfield. And I also plan to get to a bunch of shows this year -especially ones that aren't held at the Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas.

Oh and the politics. I plan to keep writing about politics until I get sued which won't be long. And lastly, for all of you (1) that inquired how my radioless trip went, I must report that I hit and killed three people along the way. Thankfully, it's not a crime in Mississippi when you have no radio or if your middle name is Jefferson.

God bless the Union.

Happy New Year:

GJ
