Let the Games Begin....
Tonight is the first Presidential debate and its being held of all places, near my new South Florida home. Even though I am a political junkie, I'm still debating whether to go on a beer tasting/kayak trip tonight. The Rogue Brewery from Oregon is holding a tasting of some of their best beers, while incorporating kayaking and grilled brauts. All good things in my opinion. I've drank my fair share of Rogue Beers so I'm a little upset that the Smoke Ale, which would go great with a grilled braut, will not be among the beers tasted tonight. However, paddling the intercooastal with a few Dead Guys in my system sure sounds more fun than watching on television two people I really can't stand talking about everything besides what really matters in the world.
Back when I called Harlem home, I had a healthy obsession with Fox 5 news anchor Julie Banderas. Love the glasses, that can-do spirit and that beautiful olive skin. I no longer get Fox 5, so I've moved on to a new woman who has more of a national reach. I'm speaking of Giada De Laurentiis host of the Food Network's 'Everyday Italian." Now, I'm a big fan of cooking shows off the bat but watching Giada is one of my favorite early Saturday afternoon events. I'm giving her Rudi status quite yet, but she is my new favorite on the cable dial.
Speaking of television, I watched the WB's much hyped Kevin Hill last night. Taye Diggs (who they say looks like me) plays a young black man who's not in jail. Hey, that's a good start for network television. Kevin's cousin dies and he is left with a 10-week old baby girl to care for. He immediately does what any intelligent person in this situation would do, he hires a gay nanny.
The show is too perfect and presents a sanitized version of life that even too fake for TV. Kevin and his co-workers aren't just going out for drinks with the head law firm partner at the end of the day, they're going to Nobu of all places. It has that annoying name-dropping thing that means nothing to anyone outside of New York. The music was also pretty weak so it didn't blaze any new trails there.
Overall, it was a decent first show. None of the characters got thrown in jail at the end of the show, nor evicted and there wasn't even one Jay Z, P. Diddy, or bling-bling reference in all of its 60 minutes. That's got to be a record for the WB.

4 Down.....
Well, hopefully the last of the big bad hurricanes have ripped through Florida. I've experienced more hurricanes in two months than I have in my entire 33 years of existence....
Of course, all this doesn't matter because the Cowboys beat the Redskins. I grew up a Cowboy fan and stuck with them up until 2002, after I spent 6 months in Dallas and wrote off all things Texas. Even though I'm lukewarm on the Cowboys, one thing remains the same; I still hate the Redskins.
Speaking of sports, can someone please put an end to the baseball season. After the Mets took 2 of 3 from the Cubs, Bud Selig should have called the season fore we have truly seen it all. My friend the Feed became a Mets fan for those three games..where was he for the other 159 games of the year....
So, my fantasy baseball team is limping to a fifth, perhaps fourth place finish. Not exactly what I had in mind at the beginning of the season. It's going to be a long, long off-season. On a brigther note, the fantasy football teams have gotten off to a 2-1 start in both leagues. I'll keep you posted on how fast I fall because everyone who has played with me know that I'm no Bum Phillips.
Recently, I've been thinking why Democrats are so pathetic on the national stage. It all happen yesterday when I woke up to find Ted Kennedy making news. Is this the best we have? What, Hillary wasn't available? The Democrats have stars like Harold Ford at their disposal, they should use them.
I saw Bush trashing Kerry and his relecutance to take two sides of every issue. Bush comments were strongest when he spoke about Kerry's war stance. Kerry of course, is not helping matters much. Is it so hard to come up with a response that will knock Bush flat?
Why doesn't Kerry say that all Americans supported the president in his bid to remove Saddam. We were, as we should be, united as nation behind a President in wartime. However, as the WMD's were not recovered and as prison scandals and mounting violence in a country suppsedly liberated became to dominate the evening news, I, like countless Americans, began to question the White House's true motives for the war. Instead of me having to answer my shift in opinion, perhaps the President should answer why so many questions are left unanswered in Iraq and why all the things he promised have yet to materialize.
Of course, that will never happen and Kerry will continue to box himself into a corner over the war.....

Wookies and Dead Guys
It's been about two weeks since I haven't been able to sleep past 5am. I've never really been the type to sleep through the night so this comes as no big shock or surprise. Why I choose to lead today's blog with this fact still remains a mystery.
Stonyfield Farms Black Cherry yogurt was the breakfast choice today. Stonyfield, if you didn't know, gives 10 percent of their profits to efforts that protect Mother Earth. Radar Screen loves a good yogurt but loves a good socially responsible business even more.
As you know, I just moved to Florida last month. This means that finding stores that carry the things I like and use had to be recreated from scratch. Stonyfield is not hard to find but after a month here, I became very concerned that getting good beer was going to become impossible.
That is until I headed into the Crown Liquor Store on Sunrise Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale. There standing behind the refrigerated glass were numerous craft beers I'd gladly take home. I ended up grabbing a six-pack of Spaten Oktoberfest - the best Oktoberfest on the market. I also picked up Rogue's Dead Guy Ale. I've never had Dead Guy in bottle (if you know where in Lauderdale one can get draft please email: gjoseph@2walls.com) but it didn;t let me down. It never does. Now, I know where I can buy beer. Trust me, these are all good things in my world.
With my newfound beer, I promptly wnet home and got myself piss-drunk. Just kidding. I did however, watch the last movie in the Star Wars Trilogy. I left my office at 10am and headed over to K-Mart to buy the newly released DVD's. They only set me back $40 bucks. I watched the first two episodes on my IBook G4 at work. I couldn't beleive how clear the picutre was. And with the JBL speakers I have, it sounded amazing as well.
I've never been a big fan of Return of the Jedi. I think its by far the worst of all the Star Wars movies, Episode 1 and 2 included. Just when I didn't think Jedi could get any worse, somehow Lucas found a way to make it impossible to watch. One thing that bothers me about the newly released Trilogy is that they opted to release those bastardized new versions with added scenes not in the original movies. I'm afraid we'll never seen the Trilogy in its original form again.

It's been one month since Radar Screen packed up the ol' Honda Accord and headed south for the warmer confines South Florida. Things are going, let's put it like that. Would I put one in the win column, not quite yet. Nor would I say that the move was one of the better decisions I've made. But hey, when you decide to change your life on 48 hours notice, don't expect it to be all roses and single batch bourbon.
I met a young woman at a restaurant the first week I was here. She was moving down from DC and since I use to live in the Nation's Capitol, we hit it off famously. Needless to say, I told her when she got back into town she should look me up. We spoke once while she was packing up her life but that was about three weeks ago. Since then, not a peep.

The baseball season is winding down and I'm glad I'm not in NYC to read and hear all about how horrible the Mets are. In other baseball news, I may have conceded defeat in this years Fantasy Baseball league. I'm like 1000 points off the lead and I don't think its going to happen this year. I blame Javier Vasquez and the early season poor performance of Damasco Marte.Loved Sarah Jessica Parker's speech at the Emmy's Sunday. Was also glad to see Arrested Development and James Spader win. They were certainly the brighest spots on television last yera.
For some reason I don't get any sound on cable channels above 100...This is not a huge problem since the writing on cable is just as bad as say the writing on the CBS Evening News....Started working out this month. 3 times a week and best of all, I don't have to leave the apartment complex to do it. That being said, I have no more excuses. Please send excuses to: gjoseph@2walls.com
