The Boys Are Back In Town
Been taking a break from the blog machine just because. Got some ideas on how to approach this so that it's not a diary in the new year, but in the meantime it's I figured I'd share some of the good things that have been happening in Spitball land.
First off, this past weekend we recorded a demo at "New Jersey City University" with Noel from the Continental. None of us knew the place existed and were all kind of surpirsed that they couldn't decide on whether to be Jersey City U or New Jersey U - but whatever, it was free. Thinking about it in hindsight, we did a pretty damn good job of getting 4 songs down in 9 hours - 2 of which were spent miking the drums. Each song was done in 2 takes with a couple of overdubs/punch-ins and one bar of "ghost drums." The hardest part was getting the vocals right, but in the end Molly delivered some of her finest recorded singing ever. Best of all, I played the rough mixes for 3 friends at work and they were all a bit taken aback at how "professional" it sounded and how tight we were. Garage, punk, surf and rock were the words most used by them to describe what they were hearing. Now we just need to get a little more time to mix this sucker so that we can hear what this damn demo will actually sound like in the end.
Then the design wizard in the band, Chris Orcutt, has the basics of a website set up for us. We just need some good digital pix and a server so that we can post some music and www.Spitball.us will be on its way. Orcutt also did some way snazzy bottle cap flyers for our next gig (December 17 at 10:30pm once again at the Continental), and hopefully we'll be able to get some "historical" Spitball info up as well.
And lastly - it's amazing, but everyone is on the same page. At our last rehearsal before recording, I realized the one year that I thought it would take for us to function as one has already happened in the 6 months since we've been back. And Molly is working on a regional radio & tour plan, and I'm getting a list together of all the folks I know in the music biz. (It's been ages since I've been in touch with most of them, so it might be a bit awkward for an old fart like me to come out of the blue with a smokin' demo. But that's the hand we were dealt, so we're gonna play it for maximum fun.)
So look out world. The 'Balls are back in town.
Guess who just got back today? Them wild-eyed boys that had been away Haven't changed, haven't much to say But man, I still think them cats are crazy....
Friday night they'll be dressed to kill Down at Dino's bar and grill The drink will flow and blood will spill And if the boys want to fight, you'd better let them....
The boys are back in town Spread the word around The boys are back in town The boys are back in town The boy's are back, the boys are back

Fight The Power
Nope - this is not a call to action or to fight back over the next four years. I'm a loser once again (continuing my perfect streak of never voting for a general or primary election winner) and I'm feeling very displaced from my own country and countrymen (especially my birthstate of Ohio). So I think my best options are to either get the hell outta dodge, start/join in the revolution, or shut the fuck up. Not sure which option I'm going to pursue at the moment, but ....last night, while I was thinking about the whole love-hate thing, I remembered the scene in Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing where Radio Raheem explains why he has these two huge brass knuckles on his hand. So now, without permission, here's the scene from my favorite Spike Lee Joint:
Mookie stares at the gold "brass knuckles" rings Radio Raheem wears on each hand. Spelled out across the rings are the words "LOVE" on the right hand and "HATE" on the left hand.
MOOKIE That's the dope.
RADIO RAHEEM I just copped them. Let me tell you the story of Right-Hand--Left- Hand--the tale of Good and Evil.
MOOKIE I'm listening.
RADIO RAHEEM HATE!
He thrusts up his left hand.
RADIO RAHEEM It was with this hand that Brother Cain iced his brother. LOVE!
He thrusts up his right hand.
RADIO RAHEEM See these fingers, they lead straight to the soul of man. The right hand. The hand of LOVE!
Mookie is buggin'.
RADIO RAHEEM The story of Life is this...
He locks his fingers and writhes, cracking the joints.
RADIO RAHEEM STATIC! One hand is always fighting the other. Left Hand Hate is kicking much ass and it looks like Right Hand Love is finished. Hold up. Stop the presses! Love is coming back, yes, it's Love. Love has won. Left Hand Hate KO'ed by Love.
Mookie doesn't know what to say, so he doesn't say anything.
RADIO RAHEEM Brother, Mookie, if I love you I love you, but if I hate you...
MOOKIE I understand.
RADIO RAHEEM I love you, my brother.
MOOKIE I love you, Black.

Give The People What They Want
I've been reading and hearing post-mortems on the election all day and don't really have much to add. But the one thought I almost posted in my much needed stoned stupor last night was that love conquered hate last night. I'm pretty sure most Kerry voters were Bush haters, but I have no idea why anyone voted for Bush. Don't get that "moral values" thing either. The guy who lied and misled us somehow was viewed as the more moral guy. Hmmmmm - must've missed that day in Sunday school.
But whatever. Let's give the people what they want and see if they want some more in four years.
Hey, hey, hey... Give the people what they want Well, it's been said before, the world is a stage A different performance with every age. Open the history book to any old page Bring on the lions and open the cage. Give the people what they want You gotta give the people what they want The more they get, the more they need And every time they get harder and harder to please
